Peckham Peace

DSC00291

So it’s the first post for quite some time! But no worries these thing’s happen or don’t- and other things happen!

So we have all been up too quite a lot over the last year and I’m gonna try and do a speedy update and cover a few of the projects that us USED girls have been kept busy with!So from July to December 2012, I (meg) completed a six month placement at the groovy green Peckham Space. In my  role as gallery assistant I had the luck to oversee the arrival of The Peckham Peace Wall and Peckham Peace Blanket.

So for those who don’t know about The Peace Blanket

‘Peckham Peace Wall by Garudio Studiage celebrates the wall of post-it notes of love and respect for the area which grew on Rye Lane following the disorder of last year, and launched on the 8th August 2012 to mark this one year anniversary..Viewing the Peckham Peace Wall up close, community members are able to read the notes and re-find their own contribution within the piece which spans the 3m x 9m western wall of Peckham Square, SE15. These are also interspersed with blank ‘notes’ onto which new comments can be made. Started by four members of Peckham Shed Theatre Company on a board covering the broken window outside Poundland, the original Peckham Peace Wall attracted the involvement of thousands of local people whose comments grew to eventually fill seven hoardings.’ -http://www.peckhamspace.com/whats-on/exhibitions/peckham-peace-wall

But the best part was Peckham Space’s Peace Blanket by Mhairi Macaulay, a camberwell art college drawing student. So throughout August I helped to facilitate the creation of the blanket, by delivering embroidery workshops and assembling contributions. Hundreds of felt squares were stitiched together with messages of peace and love for Peckham one year on from the disorder. The month also saw the first Peckham Peace festival and Southwark Arts Forum Boundless Arts festival! Possibly my busiest day at Peckham Space, with squares being churned out and the space filled with peace and love!!

So after August 2011, the fair people of Peckham also wanted to keep a record of their messages- quite rightly. So Peckham Space organised for USED’s Sarah to stitch together the squares into a beautiful blanket. This can be seen in Peckham Library for 2013 so  if passing please do go and admire Sarahs and Peckham’s fine needlework

And fingers crossed for more Peckham peace- especially with festivals and stitching!
